WOW! someone did phucking study psychology. it is now official: Obama IS history.

I gotta be the spoiler here. This pick baffled me.
#1. By picking such an inexperienced VP, McCain has totally thrown away what I thought was his best argument against Obama, the whole "who do you want answering the red phone at 3 am" thing. What can he say to that now? If I die, my VP is a soccer mom with a whole two years of government under her belt? Frankly, I'd rather have Obama or Biden answering that phone a long time before Palin.
#2 What does Palin bring to the table? Alaska? That's totally laughable, what, with a whole 3 electoral votes? What the hell was wrong with Guiliani? Have the republicans totally thrown away New York again?
#3 She isn't well known at all, so I don't think it's time to hyperventilate over how many women she is gonna add to McCain's tally in November. Let's give it a little time to stick and see how many women actually are turned on by her as VP.
#4 Frankly, I think McCain shoulda picked Romney, Guiliani, or Lieberman. I liked all three and felt confident in thier experience levels in case of McCains early demise. I felt all three could have answered that White House phone at 3 am. Even better than Obama or Biden.
I agree totally with Egor here, it is totally insane that the Democrats have lost to these people over the last 10 years.
I think the Democrats may easily beat this ticket now, what with McCain putting tape over his mouth about Obama's inexperience.

Leah: pure evil.
You cant say that w/o elaboring.. I don't know much abt her, but sounds like libel.
I am fine w this choice (you can make everyone out to be evil, but she certainly does not have "evil" in her reputation, I think they'd screen for that). Much less pure.
The only concern is that he dies, but I am not sure why everyone is so obsessed w him dying. I think he can make it for abt 1000 days of a presidential term.
Mondale didn't get a lot of votes from the national fear of Reagan dying. It sounds like a lame reason to me. Find something else, this one won't work. Reagan was older and carried 49 states. (not comparing any individuals or situations, just the "dying" thing).

Here is a LTTE that sums up my objections pretty well. I thought this was fairly common knowledge. Certainly, it hasn't been any secret.
http://newsminer.com/news/2008/jul/31/wolf-slaughter/?opinion So, pure evil because- 1- of her complete lack of compassion and support of a cruel and inhumane practice. 2- of her complete disregard for the will of the people she is supposed to serve... twice.

Leah, this doesn't appeal to a single voter that Republicans have any hope of attracting.
And what regard she has for the opinions of the people she serves is best demonstrated by her approval rating in her state.
I predict she will be extremely well liked by the swing vote and the base, with the only weakness being inexperience. Unless there's something damaging I do not know about, but like I said, they screen for that and make a decision on balance.
His other top choices were going to be punching bags for the swing vote and/or for the base, I disagree with mkgilstrap on that. McCain needs both to counteract first-time voters that are going to Obama.

I was right about the whole "lack of experience" argument being thrown back in McCain's face, It took the Democrats a whole two hours to tell McCain it was time to shut up on the issue of experience since he picked a totally inexperienced VP. This argument will resonate with the American people exactly because it's true, and McCain has lost his best weapon, IMHO.
But, Egor, I respect your opinion. So, educate me, why should I be happy about Sen. McCain's pick for VP, Exactly, in your opinion, why will it help him?

Here's what I think.. McCain is on thin ice with both his base and the swing vote. His base disagrees w him on a number of core values, as I am sure you know and remember the outcry when he was neck in neck w Romney. The swing vote is afraid he is Bush. So while he is polling well, this is all on very thin ice.
The 3 people you mentioned aggravate things to much with one or both of these groups.
Palin, so far, as I just found out - aggravates vegetarians and liberals. Who were never going to McCain no matter who he picked. Palin appears so far to be very likeable to the groups McCain needs to win.
This doesn't answer the first part of your question, but I think McCain needs to answer only the second.

mkgilstrap:
Alaska is already republican.
Same situation w Biden's delaware, its a democrat sate. Also w 3 votes, btw.
Romney's Utah is republican no matter what, Giulian's NY would not have fallen to McCain no matter what, and Lieberman's state is one of the most liberal in the country, he has to put a "D"s and "I"'s next to his name just to compete there.
Soo this whole VP-form-state thing was not going to be in play this election anyways. If it ever is. Gore lost his own (swing!) state as a presidential candidate, not even a VP.

On this issue you are. And I know lots of vegetarians that eat fish and not vote for McCain. You honestly implied that McCain was out of the question for you no matter what. Of course he was, that's the point I was making.
His VP pick was not made for you. He couldn't win w you no matter what.
Ability to analyze these things, is what makes republicans superior to democrats in election-winning these days.

Headline: Republicans in a panic over VP pick.
This ditzy lady is gonna be President? When McCain dies of old age or melonoma cancer? Leah is testament to women being pissed off that 'just picking a woman' = 'we will vote for the old guy with white hair'.
The Republicans are done. Finished. Gone.
'Obama made the best pick possible. If McCain had picked Romney he would have had a chance. Now, he has none.
What a gift to Obama.

See, James, to allude to the other topic, this IS on of those things requiring empirical arguments and evidence
I still think Obama has a good shot, democrats are basically subtracting about a quarter of the electorate from what they should have due to logistical ineptitude. Considering they should be winning in historical landslides, 51-49 is not out of the question for them this time around.
As far as Biden, If he was running for president, I'd love him. Otherwise he is useless to me. Unless he is going to completely dominate Obama's thinking, which I am not holding my breath for. Otherwise, now he his job is to do thimngs that make me lose respect for him, as a VP candidate - an attack dog, a surrogate, an ass, a traitor to his own reputation and legacy.
I wonder if the 2 of them had a screaming match about Iraq yet. Or the "presidency doesn't lend itself to on-the-job training" thing.
