    Reentry Document

Does Natasha need a Travel Document?

In other words, if we take a cruise to the Bahamas and Mexico, does Natasha need anything other than her Green Card to re-enter the US?

According to what information I have found at the USCIS Website, you only need a re-entry document if you are going to be out of the country for more than one year.  Is this true?   It seems our lawyer said we should get a travel document or US passport for each holder of Green Card

What about the kids?   One is 17 and the other is 20.

What about visiting Canada or Mexico?  I know she doesn't need a visa to visit, but what about reentry?

I would call the cruiseline and ask..  They are somewhat more lax than when traveling independently. And if they have good news, have them point you to a legal document stating so.

As far as independent trevel, travel agencies have all this info.

anything else is just rumors, plus rules change.

I've been to Canada. She would need her national passport + green card/ or travel document/ or any other visa allowing re-entry. Like any other place in world. And as far as I understand green-card holders can't have US passports, only national ones.

That, too, is how I read that TallSally.  Thank you for your response.   I read the USCIS as saying that when attempting to re-enter the US, having been gone on a trip lasting less than a year, all one needs is your green card and your national passport.

A travel document, (reentry permit) is only necessary if you have been out of the country for more than one year consecutively.

I want to make sure this is true before we travel.  We are planning a trip to Canada, Bahamas, and Mexico next year and want no problems.

this is how I read this.  I figured all you guys who travel back and forth to Russia and Ukraine would know about this.  Any reason to apply for and pay for a reentry permit?  Will there be a "problem at the gate"?

    Re: Reentry Document

When I was a green card holder few years back I traveled with a travel passport and a green card.  Travel passport is issued by USCIS, looks like a US passport, only it is of a hidious turquoise color and says travel document on it, has a US seal that says Dept. of Home Land Security.  I think I had a valid Russian passport at the moment (or could have gotten one) but wanted to travel only with docs issued by US and have nothing in my hands issued by the Russian government. So if a Russian citizen needs a visa to go to Spain let's say, Spanish consulate will put the visa in the Travel passport.  Since she still has  Ukrainian citizenship, I would call Canadian/Mexican embassy and ask what Ukrainians need to enter Canada/Mexico.  Her GC is her ticket back to US-that how i worked for me, and we traveled to Mexico several times, Europe, and Israel-GC and Travel Passport.

Although I know plenty of people who travel with a Russian (or other Soviet passport) and a GC with no problems.
