    teaching ESL abroad?

I’ve just had an idea. At this moment, it seems like a great idea, but possibly I am just high since I am drinking coffee boiled with loose grounds in a saucepan, extremely strong and a bit gritty. Tomorrow it may seem like a hideous idea. I’ve been reading about native English speakers who live abroad and support themselves teaching English. It would be nice if grammar despot could be a marketable job skill. (edited because I am inclined to reveal things that are far too personal while under the influence of a coffee buzz)

    teaching ESL abroad?

I currently have two friends teaching English abroad. One is one a program in Japan, and loves it. The other went to live with her military boyfriend in South Korea, and teaches English on the side. Both have very different experiences. My recommendation would be to find a program in US that specializes in this. ~Inna~

Thanks Inna. After I read you post, I searched online for programs and read about some certification processes.

A reqruiter once called me, and after the business part of the conversation we started chatting, turns out she was calling from Spain, where she was teaching English for about a year and a half. Her company allowed her to keep her position in the States, while paying her as a part-time employee, and do her recruiting job from Europe. Now that's cool! Neat site...I'm about to explore it...thanks. :) Did the recruiter speak Spanish also? That is one thing I don't understand;if I am reading correctly, the ESL teachers are not required to know the language of the people they are teaching. I don't see how this is possible, but I guess that is why they want you to take those training courses. Did anyone here learn English from someone who didn't speak Russian?

After leaving in any country for year or over you probably will speak either really well or bearably well. Spanish is easy anyway, Japanese or Korean would be a lot harder. When I came here I had basic knowledge of English, but true learning took place here. Most of my teachers and "teachers" were non-Russian speakers.

Most of my english came from people who did not speak russian at all. I actually believe this is a necessary condition for fluency. In this situation, though, I can't imagine how you would get past basic russian for example. I mean after pictures of birds and trees. How would you communicate grammar without precise translations?

I have wondered this also. It doesn't seem possible, yet this is not what I am told if I understand correctly.
