    Alex writing..

Leah, take a look here, from the pro (Ken Rockwell), a very authoritative guy on all things digital photo:

    http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

If you minimum shutter lag is one of your priorities, you should really be looking at DSLR cameras like Nikon D40 or Canon XTi or something lower end like that.  You'll spend a little over 300, but get a whole lot more performance and versatility than a compact camera.  Then again, compactness is the trade-off.  Read what this guy is writing, good info.

Thanks, Alex.  :)  That site is great... lots of information... exactly what I needed.  I'm still reading through everything.

I'd rather avoid the shutter lag than have something compact.  My hands don't seem to be steady enough when there is a delay... and people and animals tend to move if I'm trying to get a photo of them.

lol... actually, I miss film, but haven't wanted to admit it.  I don't want to pay for film though, or more specifically I don't want to pay for developing and I haven't used a darkroom since college so I doubt I remember how.  And, I want the convenience of digital.  My parents have/had a great digital camera.  They bought it about a decade ago and it was the kind where you actually put a floppy in the camera.  I loved that camera, but the battery stopped holding a charge several years ago and they no longer sell replacements and I haven't had a floppy drive in years.

    Re: cameras

Actually, that's why I still recommend Canon.

The one I have is clunkier than other cutsie cameras but it's a perfect combination of point-and-shoot and something more advanced. It handles the shake, has lots of manual controls, and I'm not too worried about dropping it (the casing is solid, lcd covered).

It was about $300 a looooong time ago and it's still better than a lot of my friends' cameras. I've been traveling since May and, with one or two exceptions, my camera takes the best pictures out of everyone on the trip. It just doesn't let me screw up very much. The colors are amazing and I get way fewer blurry pictures. All this while taking pictures on the bus, plane, pesero, of people dancing, running, whatever... everything moving, basically.

so.... You dont want to pay for the film but going to buy a new digital camera... yeah, I understand that...

    Are you using B&W film?

Let's say that a roll of film, and the cost to develop it, costs even $10, and I use one roll on each building.  By the time I've done thirty buildings, I've spent as much as I was originally planning to spend on a new camera.  When you consider that there are probably several hundred buildings I want to photograph, I could have bought the new camera  ten times.  So yes, buying a new camera makes more sense.

I do like black & white for architectural details (you see more sometimes), but ideally I'd like to have b&w and color of everything.

BTW, Canon released a new pro-sumer SLR on the market, Xsi, it gets raving reviews and a kit with zoom lense retails right now around $700.

Great.  I'll check my PM box every few seconds until the # arrives.

Though you are very nearly perfect in that photo, could I convince you to try a mustache?  Somehow, I just keep imagining you with one.
