    What to read?

Going on vacation for a week. Any recommendations on reading material? Some interesting fiction perhaps?

    What genre do you prefer?

Fiction, science fiction, or non-fiction if it is interesting and makes you think after you closed the book. The only thing I don't like is fantasy with half-naked muscular chics with swords and dragons behind their asses donkeys.

These won't make you think afterward, but for light vacation reading:

    Crime/mystery - John Sandford's Prey novels

Fantasy/Sci-Fi - Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books. You need to start at the beginning with these, and they are very tongue in cheek. I like them for the pure escapism, and for the secret lab you'll learn about if you read them.

Sci-Fi - Jack McDevitt or maybe Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars books

Or light horror with Dan Simmons or James Herbert.

For fiction that's more literary, but still entertaining, I like Robert Girardi -- particularly "Madeleine's Ghost"

Daemon by Daniel Suarez in sci-fi, and Spook Country  by William Gibson in fiction, good stuff.

Прочитал в русском переводе "Империю ангелов" Бернарда Вербера, может есть и английский перевод на Амазоне, не плохо.

Don't know your individual taste, but I always enjoy a good non-fiction history book.  Not only am I entertained, I learn a little something I didn't know before.   IMHOSmile

Try anything written by Winston Churchill, especially Gathering Storm, Triumph and Tragedy, Hinge of Fate, etc....

    Re: What to read?

Spook County disappointed me....  compared to other Gibson work - little on the down side....

Richard Morgan for the best "drive" in sc-fi !!

Thank you guys! I've got "Pattern recognition" by William Gibson and "Altered Carbon" by Richard Morgan. I couldn't find other books you recommened in Borders. But there is (almost) always another vacation ahead :)

Yes, of course Pattern is a better book, but I wouldn't compare it to Neuromancer, right?  I just love the way he writes.
